How and why did you get into this business?
A microeconomics class changed the direction of my life. I arrived at UNCW as a chemistry major, but economics helped me understand something personal: why my father’s boat business, despite his extraordinary skill as a craftsman, experienced more lows than highs. I switched majors because I wanted to understand what shapes a family’s financial story, and how to change it. After college, I became a banker and consistently exceeded my lending goals. But I was uncomfortable measuring success by how much I helped people borrow. I wanted to help people save, invest, and build generational wealth, which led me to the CFP® professional in my branch. Her work fascinated me, so I put myself through the CFP® program and eventually became a financial advisor. This career finally brought together my interests and enabled me to make a valuable difference in people's lives.
How does your role fit in the big picture of serving clients?
My role is to help ensure a client’s financial plan works on paper and for the life they are actually living. My journey gives me genuine empathy and real-world perspective, as I’ve experienced many of the chapters our clients navigate myself: advising, consulting, building and selling a company, leading within a global corporation, raising a family, and making a major career transition. I understand the pressure of making decisions when employees, investors, colleagues, and family members are counting on you. At Balentine, I connect our team’s expertise with each client’s goals, concerns, and responsibilities. I listen for what the numbers alone cannot reveal and walk alongside clients through every chapter, helping them make thoughtful decisions and move forward with confidence.
Why did you choose to come to work at Balentine?
One word: Excellence. While looking to return to a wealth management career, I was also seeking a firm with standards aligned with my own. From my first conversation, I saw a consistency in Balentine’s people, processes, and reputation that reflects a boutique firm committed to doing things the right way. I have never aspired to be average or to work within an average organization. I want to learn from and contribute alongside the best, serve exceptional clients, and pursue high performance with discipline and grace.
What is the toughest business decision you’ve faced?
My toughest business decisions occurred during my time as an entrepreneur. The first was letting valued employees go when the market contracted and revenue declined. Because the consequences belonged to real people and their families, it was an agonizing reminder that leadership sometimes requires making decisions when no option feels good. The second was recognizing when it was time to step away from the company I co-founded and had built for eight years. I needed to show up for my family, and the business was ready for its next generation of leaders. Through that experience, I set aside identity, ambition, and my deep attachment to what we had built. Both decisions taught me that leadership is ultimately stewardship. Whether it’s of capital, people, or organizations.
What do you like to do in your down time away from work?
Most of my time away from work is spent keeping up with my daughters’ cheerleading practice, competitions, and games. My husband and I are passionate about watching our daughters pursue something that requires discipline, teamwork, and courage. Our church is also an important part of my time outside of work, as our family is actively involved in a community we value.
