How and why did you get into this business?
I'm passionate about helping clients see the full range of options available to them as they plan for the future. Time is powerful when it works in your favor, and I love helping clients understand that the decisions they make today can benefit them years down the road. Being on a team that makes that kind of impact on people's lives and their families is a great feeling, and it's why I love this industry.
What was the hardest lesson learned and how did you learn it?
Twenty years ago, I had the chance to throw out the first pitch in a baseball game. I thought I would be "cool" and try to throw a curve ball. It didn't make it across home plate and hit the dirt. I heard laughs in the stands and it was embarassing on a personal level. However that day taught me a lusson that’s been with me ever since: that sometimes in life we overcomplicate a task by trying to throw curve balls, when what we really need is to focus on getting the job done, or getting the ball across homeplate. That experience has become a compass for me whenever I face complex challenges in my career. I still have that baseball as a reminder of the lessons I learned that day.
What is it that you do at Balentine that gives you the most personal satisfaction?
Delivering for clients and ensuring each person has an exceptional experience while helping the people around me raise the bar and keep improving.
What are the big issues that Balentine and companies like it need to solve to truly benefit the parties they serve?
There are a lot of good answers to this question, but I’ll focus on just one: true client service means thinking about the long-term. It is critical that we involve their families, children, and grandchildren, to make sure they are involved and educated to make informed decisions and carry forward the legacy that will one day be handed to them.
If you were abandoned on a deserted island, what single creature comfort would you desire most?
I love to read, both fiction and non fiction. If I were stranded on a deserted island, I’d want one of my thick history books handy to pass the time.
